Symposium "Celebrating Ten Years of the International Space Station" at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris

On 9 and 10 July 2008, the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) held a Symposium celebrating the International Space Station's tenth anniversary of on-orbit operations.

Several hundred senior government, industry and research institute and professional society officials from around the world attended the Symposium which took place at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France. Among of them Mr. J. Martín Canales Romero attended this very interesting symposium.

Participants in the Symposium listened to panel discussions on the creation and the expansion of the Space Station partnership that began 25 years ago. Additional discussions provided first-hand perspectives from five ISS crew members concerning living and working on the station and examined the current status of the partnership through the eyes of the agency and industry leaders who manage the very capable, highly motivated Space Station team.

The Symposium also focused on the future of the Space Station – as a research laboratory, a facility to demonstrate long duration human space flight operations, and as a partnership of countries working together to understand, use and explore space.

The meeting brought together the key leaders in the past and future of the international Space Station.
